Earth Hour

March 25, 2023

It’s time to turn off all the non-essential lights and turn up the conversation.

Have you heard of earth hour, and do you know what these 60 minutes could do in a year?

Earth Hour is a global event observed annually on the last Saturday of March. Millions of people worldwide turn off their lights for one hour to show their commitment to mitigating the effects of climate change and promoting environmental sustainability. The first Earth Hour was observed in Sydney, Australia, in 2007 and has over since become a global movement.

While it is difficult to measure the exact impact of a one-hour event, however, some numbers can help us to understand its potential benefits:

Reduction in electricity consumption: During Earth Hour, millions of people around the world turn off their lights, resulting in a significant decrease in electricity consumption. For example, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) recorded savings of 329 megawatts (MW) in electricity consumption in the Emirate of Dubai during Earth Hour 2022, equivalent to a reduction of 132 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Reduction in carbon emissions: Reducing electricity consumption during Earth Hour also helps lower carbon emissions. According to the Earth Hour website, in 2020, Earth Hour reduced 4.4 million kg of carbon dioxide emissions.

Increased awareness: Earth Hour raises global awareness about environmental issues and the importance of sustainability. According to the Earth Hour website, in 2020, Earth Hour reached over 190 countries and territories, with over 600 landmarks and buildings participating in the event.

Community engagement: Earth Hour is not just a 60-minute event but also an opportunity for communities to unite and take action for the planet. Earth Hour website shows that in 2020 over 1.3 million people participated in community events and activities related to this global movement.

This Saturday, from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, let’s come together to observe Earth Hour and show the world how much we care about our only earth.

#OurPlanetNeedsYou. Give an Hour for Earth’s Sake!
